FAQs
What is USASA?
The United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) provides world-class events, resources, and education that empower the growth of competitive Snowboarding and Freeskiing. Check out these important resources below.
Who is USASA for?
YOU! All ages, genders, and abilities are welcome to compete at USASA in any of our events. USASA events are catered to all ages and abilities and embrace you in your competitive journey.
How do I get started in competing?
Your first step is purchasing a membership with USASA. If you are turning 18 this season (before April 15), you will also need to purchase a US Ski & Snowboard membership before you can sign up at USASA.
Once your membership(s) are active, you will be able to register for events after November 12, 2024. Make sure to take a look at our Rule Book, so that you understand the rules and all of the opportunities to qualify for our National Championships.
Which home series should I join?
When considering which Home Series to join, keep in mind which resorts you ski/ride at, instead of where you live geographically. For example, if you tend to ski/ride resorts in Northern Vermont, but live in New York, make sure to join the Northern Vermont Series. If you would like some guidance on choosing your home series, let us know below and we can help you choose.
Do I need a coach?
No. You can just show up and compete. Your parents are welcome to drop you off at the start areas but are not allowed on the course. Parents can also meet you in the finish and cheer you on from the sidelines.
Where do I find a coach?
Check out the US Ski & Snowboard website here to search for a certified ski/snowboard club, which can point you in the right direction. Join a club or team is a great way to share the joy of competing at a USASA event.
Coaches are a great way to further your development and can provide valuable insights to your skiing and riding. All coaches that attend USASA events are educated, validate and screened through US Ski & Snowboarding.
How do I qualify for Nationals?
There are two main pathways to qualify for the USASA National Championships: through your Regional Series, or through the National Rankings. See them both explained in detail below.
Regional Series
Each Regional Series is allocated one position for their Series winner in each discipline, age class and gender, regardless of events hosted. If a Series does not host an event, the highest-ranked competitor based on the National Ranking, from the respective home Series will be awarded the position.
National Ranking
National Rankings will be used to seed the remaining positions up to the proposed field sizes. The field sizes at Nationals are based on a sliding percentage scale of the overall participation nationally- not to exceed 68 per age group. Our goal is to have the top-ranked competitors regionally and nationally participate in the National Championships.
How do the Regional Points and National Rankings work?
When you compete inside your “home” series, you earn regional points. Each series determines different criteria for qualification for their National Champs quota spots depending on the discipline and number of events held, such as “best 2 out of 3 results,” or “best 4 out of 5 results.” The winners of each series in each discipline, age and gender, get an automatic invite to Nationals.
Your National Ranking is composed of your top three overall event results, in any Series. Those top three may happen to be in your “home” Regional Series, or it may be a combination of scores from other series’ competitions you have traveled to. These rank you against all the other competitors in your age group and serve as your National Ranking
Do I have to create an account for each of my children?
No. In your Liveheats login you can now associate family members for ease of access. If your child is under 18, you may list your email address as the contact info.
If I went to Nationals last year am I automatically qualified this year?
No. Qualification to the National Championships is based on either winning a Regional Series qualification position in your named home Series, or being awarded a National Ranking position after all regional qualifications are awarded. Annual quotas for each age group are announced a month before Nationals and are based on a percentage of the competitors nationwide in an age group. Points do not carry over to the next season.
