The future of snowboarding & Freeskiing
History
The USASA Story: Fueling the Stoke Since 1988
It all kicked off in 1988 when Chuck Allen, an amateur surf coach with a vision, founded the United States Amateur Snowboarding Association with just $500 from Transworld SNOWboarding Magazine. The goal? Build a national platform where snowboarders can compete, thrive, and have a blast. And that’s exactly what happened.
USASA quickly became the first governing body for grassroots snowboarding, standardizing competition rules and launching the USASA National Championships. Since the first championship in 1990, we’ve traveled coast to coast—from the small home mountains of Vermont and Maine to the legendary runs of Oregon and California—before making Copper Mountain, CO, our permanent home since 2008.
Growing the Sport. Honoring the Legacy. Shaping the Future.
In 2011, we welcomed freeskiers to the USASA family. This growth led to our official rebrand in 2014 as the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association, while keeping the same iconic logo that has supported thousands of athletes.
A Community Carved from Excellence, Respect, and Fun
Today, we’re dedicated to keeping the legacy of snowboarding and freeskiing alive and pushing our athletes to new heights.
With nearly 100% of the U.S. Olympic Snowboard and Freeski Team starting their journey here, we’re stoked to continue shaping the future of the sport all the way to Milano Cortina 2026 and beyond.
