USASA Nationals Day 4: Ryan Wachendorfer Wins Halfpipe Gold

The sun shone down on a perfect pipe as the Open Class riders took to Copper’s 22 foot halfpipe for the finale of  the 2016-17 season. Colorado native and U.S. Snowboarding Team member, Ryan Wachendorfer, landed two double cork rotations to take home top prize while Mammoth Team rider, Joshua Bowman, charged into second and won a $400 gift card from Columbia Sportswear for earning Best Trick with a huge frontside double cork 1080. Third place went to Aspen Snowmass rider, Robert “Bob O” Petitt.

The women’s competition was won by Anna Valentine who landed a big frontside 540 on the first hit, second went to Southern Vermont Series’ Noelle Edwards and Mary Prantis took home third.

The alpine courses were running fast with Will Taylor and Nate True taking top spots in snowboard youth and junior men divisions respectively.

The ladies took to the start gate in snowboardcross with breaker, jams, youth, junior and menehune divisions charging the fast and clean Copper Mountain course. Acy Lane Craig, Julianne Tonkel, Kennedy Day and Madeline Lochte-Bono all took home golds.

Valentino Guseli, from the Southern Vermont Series, continued to dominate the breaker boys division taking home another gold in slopestyle.

Open class men and women competed in Rail Jam. Riders were throwing down X Games worthy tricks with Miles Fallon snagging  gold for the men and Alexis Roland jumping on top of the podium at the end of the night for the Ladies.

The Progression Continues at USASA Nationals

A fresh blanket of snow covered Copper Mountain for the third day of the 2017 USASA National Championships. Despite the fresh snow, all venues were running fast and medals continued to be won in slopestyle, halfpipe, snowboardcross, giant slalom, slalom and rail jam.

In women’s slopestyle progression was the name of the game with Ellie Duchow from Breckenridge, CO taking the win followed closely by California native Makayla Kellogg and Ellie Weiler. Fifth place finisher, Amber Zierden, landed a cab 540 underflip and earned herself a free session to High Cascade SummerCamp for the days hardest charger.

The progression continued over in men’s snowboard youth halfpipe competition with Kolman Lecroy taking the gold and a $400 gift card from Columbia Sportswear for Best Trick. Lecroy stomped a frontside inverted 900 on the first hit and edged out 2nd place finisher Joey Okesson, who took home Snurfer’s award for biggest air. Big Mountain West’s, Parker Giblin rounded out the podium in third.

Nor-Am racers took over the slalom course today, with American AJ Russ taking home $2000 along with his gold medal. Austrian Ina nabbed her second title in as many days on the women’s side.

Giant Slalom hosted Grommets and Kahuna with Rowan Driscoll racing in Grommet boys taking that top spot on the podium and Alex Juhasz in Kahuna men taking home the gold.

Eighty  Breaker boys took to the start gate in snowboardcross and Cole Paraiso made his way to the top of the heap, claiming a much sought after gold.

The snow continued to fall throughout the night during rail jam. Kenna Calliguri and Wyatt Niesen dominated rail jam under the lights.

Nationals Continues At Copper Mountain

USASA competitors continued to impress judges and time clocks alike at day two of USASA Nationals in Copper Mountain, CO with a series of first time National Championships titles. South Tahoe Series ripper, Kinsley White, took home her first USASA National Championship title in Breaker Girls with an impressive frontside 540 on the first hit. That trick not only sealed her gold medal fate but it also landed her a $400 Columbia Sportswear Gift Card for Best Trick of the day in Halfpipe. Henry McCarthy, from the Maine Mountain Series, won his first USASA Nationals’ gold in Junior Men Snowboardcross, coming  back from a ruptured spleen last season.

“It is nice to be here today after coming back from a tough injury last season. I spent a lot of time in the gym and challenged myself with a lot of mental preparation.” McCarthy said, “After working my way up in regional events I am now here at the USASA Nationals landing myself at the top of the box, I am so grateful for that.”  

Slopestyle hosted Grommet and Ruggie girls and boys. Alessandro Barbieri from Portland, OR took home gold in Grommet boys. Reese Moryn from Harris, MN nabbed the win in Ruggie girls.

Halfpipe hosted Youth, Junior, and Breaker women. Kayleigh Carew, earned gold in Youth and Kai Shafer took the win for Juniors women along with highest air of the day.

Darren Gardner lead a Canadian sweep off the Nor-Am Open Class Giant Slalom podium followed by fellow teammates Richard Evanoff and Sebast Beaulieu in third. In youth alpine, Jams shredder Griffin Masters took the win in Giant Slalom and Cole Paraiso grabbed gold in Breaker Boys in Slalom.

Jake Vedder wins USASA Nationals SBX

The first day of USASA Nationals competition went off without a hitch here at Copper Mountain with US Snowboarding Team athletes dominating the Nor-Am and Open class Snowboardcross races. Youth Olympic Games winner and US Snowboarding Development Team rider, Jake Vedder, won his first National Championship title, second place was earned by fellow US Snowboarding Team member Mick Dierdorff. Josh Miller nabbed third.

"I love USASA Nationals, I’ve been coming here since I was six or seven and this is actually the first time I’ve ever won here." Vedder said after winning gold and taking home Wend Wax's Fast Time of the Day, "I usually do not qualify that well and I ended up qualifying two seconds faster than everybody else. I thought today is my day, we are going to take it one heat at a time." USASA Nationals is the started point for nearly every US athlete on the pro circuit, with every 2014 US Olympic team member getting their start at USASA competitions. On the women's side, US rider Colleen Healey bested Australian rider Georgia Baff and fellow American Audrey McManiman. 

Slopestyle hosted Junior and Youth men with Alex Atno from Lavallette, NJ taking gold in Youth men and Peter Croasdale from Lakeville, MN winning in Junior men.

Halfpipe hosted Ruggies and Kahunas with snowboarding legend Chris Pappas taking home the win in Kahunas and a $400 gift card from Columbia Sportswear for Best Trick and Henry Hawkins taking gold for Ruggie boys.

The alpine venues were running fast with groups 2 and 4 charging the courses with Mens Adaptive Class shredder Eric Snyder taking the win in Slalom and Hans Huber grabbing gold in Breaker Boys Giant Slalom.

The 28th Annual USASA Nationals Kicks off At Copper Mountain!

Let the Games Begin!


The 28th annual USASA National Championships is officially underway. Nearly 2,000 USASA athletes have descended upon Copper Mountain, CO in anticipation of becoming a 2017 USASA National Champion in halfpipe, slopestyle, rail jam, giant slalom, slalom, snowboardcross and skiercross. Snowboard week's opening ceremony parade honored all of our 32 regional series and the competitors who will represent them here at Copper.

Honor and gratitude was the name of the game lwith KIND Snacks honoring one rider from each series who demonstrated kindness both on and off the hill with their KINDest Rider Award. Recipients like Mid-Atlantic series rider, Mazee Simpson, and Mt. Hood Series rider, Caleb Ingersoll, we’re nominated by their series directors for being supportive, community-minded riders.

USASA’s Executive Director, Mike Mallon, continued the gratitude theme by sharing the words of riders from across the nation giving thanks to their mentors, parents, coaches and friends while highlighting USASA’s core values of Respect, Excellence and Fun.

The final round of invitations to the USASA National Championship expired at midnight last night, Sunday March 26th, 2017, online event registration is now closed. 1870 snowboarders and freeskiers registered for one or more events, making this the biggest National Championship ever!

Startlists, are now being built and will be available for viewing on Wednesday, March 29th, 2017 via links under the Nationals Menu.
